The wildfires

I received an e-mail this morning from a fellow photoblogger (thanks, Jeff!) asking whether the huge wildfires in San Diego County have affected us. They haven't, except that we work at the local newspaper and have thus been putting in some long days.

We got back from New York on Saturday, and the fires started Sunday. Welcome home. Now we're just hoping the wind dies down and are getting ready in case we have to evacuate. I spent yesterday morning buying things like batteries and bottled water. Dust masks were nowhere to be found.

More than a half-million people have been told to get out so far. I'm almost sure we won't have to join them, but the experts are saying that if the wind doesn't ease up, the fires could burn all the way to the coast.

Our house, along with the rest of this very large city, could be between the flames and the ocean, depending on which way the wind blows. We'll see what happens.
